DOCUMENTARY: "The Amalgamation"
Brown vs. Board of Education was a major victory for civil rights in the United States in 1954. However, before this landmark decision, a group of musicians in Los Angeles were working to amalgamate the black and white musicians’ unions of Los Angeles. Recognizing that separate but equal was not in fact equal, the community symphony orchestra was created in the early 1950's, containing members from the black musicians’ union (local 767) and the white musicians’ union (local 47). This gathering of musicians paved the road for the amalgamation of both unions.
